Note: This is a wide category. It includes correspondence and papers concerned with the Socialist Movement in all its manifestations; all papers relating to J.R.M.'s social work (in the early part of his career) and pacifist activities in the First World War;correspondence with members of the Fellowship of the New Life (in the 1890s); papers relating to ethical societies and to J.R.M.'s activities in the running of Dr. James Gwyther's Boys' Club. More obviously the class covers all material relating to the Fabian Society, I.L.P., S.D.F., Labour Party and National Labour. It extends farther to incorporate all papers concerning J.R.M.'s position as Leader of the Opposition, and Party Leader. That which would be classified as `Official' or `Official Private' for the years when J.R.M. held office, comes under the categorisation of `Party' when he does not: this includes League of Nations matters and International affairs. Anything reflecting situations and opinions within the Labour Party and the Cabinet come into this class, as does anything relating to India, by-elections, cabinet-making and unions.
