Reference: Subseries within PRO 30/69
Title: PERSONAL
Note: This section contains all the papers which reflect the activities of J.R.M. and M.E.M. as private individuals and parents. The sub-divisions are as follows: Correspondence: (714-760) private letters received and written by both (See detailed list and index in Vol. 2). General: (761-850) a series of named files and bundles, arranged chronologically. The chronological sequence is disrupted more in this class, than in the others, as it covers a wider period and is more diverse in its subject matter: individual piece numbers may include papers ranging over a whole decade, for instance see 774. There are, in addition, three large sub-sections which should be noted: Ramsay and Allan Family Papers, 1793-1915 (This comprises the papers of J.R.M.'s mother, aunt, maternal grandparents and great grandparents. J.R.M. seems to have carefully preserved what little records there were of his family, as is indicated by the fact that he was having his ancestry traced in 1935 by a John Hardie see 757) (762-782) Financial Papers, 1896-1937 (783-801) Papers concerning the last illness and death of M.E.M., also those relating to the memorials which were erected to her (These include: a statue in Lincolns Inn Fields; the MacDonald Middleton Baby Clinic in North Kensington; a ward in the Leicester Children's Hospital). (803-811) Papers and Correspondence of Margaret E. MacDonald: Margaret's private letters and papers. For material relating to her social and political activities see Political-Party. There are four sub-divisions in this section: Papers of King, Thomson and Gladstone families (These are numerous and contain several letters from Lord Kelvin, Margaret's great uncle on her mother's side) (851-861) Margaret's correspondence as an individual, rather than as J.R.M.'s wife, including letters received before her marriage (862-905) Diaries and Note-Books (906-925) General (926-927) Photographs: (928-948) chiefly studio portraits of J.R.M. and `snaps' of the MacDonald children. There are also a number of King, Thomson and Gladstone photographs (See M.M.M.'s family tree). Addenda 949-974
