Description:

This series contains general correspondence and letter books from the British consulate in Damascus, Ottoman Empire. Comprises letter books, 1841 to 1843; general correspondence, 1901 to 1921.

Date: 1837-1921
Separated material:

Damascus archives prior to 1900 (or more probably 1901) were destroyed in 1921, with the exception of two copy books of correspondence, 1837-1848 and 1886-1892, and three correspondence registers, 1872-1890. These items may have survived the general destruction of archives on the rupture of diplomatic relations in November 1956, but, if so, their present whereabouts is not known.
