Title: | CAPTAIN HOPE'S PAPERS |
Note: | Captain (later Admiral) Herbert Hope, an officer on the War Staff in Admiralty August 1914, was appointed to Room 40 about October 1914 to vet and comment on all German decrypts. He was, in effect, the head of Room 40, although Sir Alfred Ewing, Director of Naval Education, was officially in charge. He began simply by adding notes and explanations to individual decrypts, but by mid-1915 was keeping a daily dairy of events. In 1917 he was posted to sea in the Adriatic and succeeded by Commander (later Admiral) William `Bubbles' James. His diaries were then continued as Room 40's official War Diary.
