Administrative / biographical background:

This function passed to the Department of Employment and Productivity on the disbandment of the Department of Economic Affairs, and a group of inter-related Prices and Incomes Divisions were set up to deal with policies in this area.

Initially the work was split between an Incomes Division: Private Sector, an Incomes Division: Public Sector, and a Prices and General Policy Division, all of which were re-organised in 1970 to form an Incomes and Prices Division, subsequently re-named the Incomes Division, and then Incomes Division 1 and Incomes Division 2. The function relating to policy on prices was transferred to the Department of Trade and Industry in 1970.
