Administrative / biographical background:

The Northern Economic Planning Council was created in 1965.

The area administered by the Council originally consisted of Cumberland, Durham, the North Riding of Yorkshire, Northumberland and Westmorland. Following the local government reorganisation of 1974 the composition of the area became Cumbria, Durham, Cleveland, North Yorkshire, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
