Administrative / biographical background:

In 1920 the Department consisted of a Central Establishments Organisation and six establishment sections among which the work was divided as follows: E.1 Council Secretariat, Industries Department, Wages and Arbitration Department, Intelligence Department, Solicitor's Department, Publicity Department. E.2 Headquarter offices of the Employment Department, and of the Finance Department, including the Claims and Records Office at Kew. E.3 Provincial Offices of the General Manager's Department. E.4 Training Department. E.5 Appointments Department. E.6 Civil Liabilities Department.

There were two other file codes in this series: E. 1909-1912. Board of Trade Establishment Department files on the setting up of the Employment Exchanges, including an investigation into trades covered, under 'Government Departments'. All the E files are in two boxes, LAB 2/210 and LAB 2/211. EBO. 1929-1933. Relations with Employment Exchanges.
