Administrative / biographical background:

Details of fines owed as a result of legal processes were sent to the Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer's Office in the Exchequer and copies were enrolled in the Pipe Office. The Clerk of the Estreats would issue a summons of the green wax to the sheriffs to answer for outstanding debts from the profits of justice recorded on the Pipe Rolls and on the estreats rolls. The nichil rolls were compiled by the Clerk of the Nichils based on records maintained by the Clerk of the Estreats and the Foreign Apposer, and were sent to the Pipe Office for process to be issued to recover the debts.
