Catalogue description Exchequer: Pipe Office: Ancient Deeds, Series P

This series consists of a group of 50 miscellaneous deeds, largely evidences of title, accumulated and kept by the Pipe Office. On the abolition of the Pipe Office in 1833 the deeds passed into the custody of the King's Remembrancer before being transferred to the Public Record Office in 1858. Most of the instruments in the series bear marks of acknowledgement before a Master of Chancery or a Baron of the Exchequer, and those of enrolment on the close rolls or on memoranda rolls of the King's Remembrancer, on their dorse. Many of those later in date than 1554 also have marks of enrolment before an Auditor of the Land Revenue.

The deeds have little in common, except that many of the grantors hold office or other profits of the Crown and are granting or surrendering lands and rights to the monarch as security or in satisfaction of debts. Many of the grantors are of high social status. These deeds were removed from the 314 mainly sixteenth century deeds in E 355on account of their small size.
