Title: Exchequer: Office of First Fruits and Tenths: Arrears of Tenths
Description:

This series contains records of the arrears of tenths due to the Crown annually from ecclesiastical benefices, in line with the valuation recorded in the Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1535.

By an Act of 1717, responsibility for the collection of tenths was removed from the diocesan authorities and placed in the hands of a receiver of tenths who accounted to the receiver of first fruits.

The records appear to have been created in the office of the receiver of first fruits.

Date: 1717-1822
Arrangement:

These volumes, each for a single year, record arrears of tenths, with notes of dates at which payments were made, arranged by diocese and deanery. In most volumes, the arrears are listed also county by county. Most volumes end with a list of process issued for recovery of arrears of tenths, copied from a loose sheet, which is, in many instances, present in the volume.
