Catalogue description Exchequer and Supreme Court of Judicature: King's Remembrancer: Presentation Rolls of the Lord Mayor of London and of the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex

The Presentation Rolls constitute the official record of the ancient ceremonies by which the Crown gave its consent to the election of the Mayor of the city of London and of the sheriffs of London and Middlesex.

As part of that ceremony the sheriffs rendered to the Crown the ancient quit rents of a hatchet, bill hook, six horseshoes and 61 nails for certain named lands in Shropshire and London. Both the mayor and the sheriffs also delivered warrants of attorney to receive writs, to render accounts, and for the delivery of certain claims arising from their ancient liberties. Until 1858 the rolls record only the admission of the mayor and sheriffs; thereafter they record also the render of quit rents.

The records include also filed warrants and the order of ceremonies, 1833-1842.

Responsibility for recording the admissions passed to the King's Remembrancer on the abolition of the office of Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer in 1833. The ceremony is still held annually with much pomp in the great hall of the Supreme Court of Judicature.
