Title: BULGARIA
Date: 1940-1958
Administrative / biographical background:

In Bulgaria, the role of the Special Operations Executive was a distinctly peripheral one. Its efforts, through the left-wing faction of the Agrarian Union, first to develop an anti-Axis propaganda campaign and to create a number of sabotage groups, and then to support a political revolutionary movement prepared to strike against the Government when the time was ripe, made little impact on events in Bulgaria and terminated when Russian forces invaded. Bulgarian resistance groups, such as they were, were generally disinclined to allow a close SOE involvement in their affairs and as was the case in Albania and Yugoslavia, it was the Communist partisans who proved to be the most effective.
