Title: Palatinate of Durham: Chancery Court: Case Files
Description:

This series consists of surviving case files in proceedings in the Durham Chancery Court. Not all files from the years 1877 to 1928 survive, but thereafter the series appears to be complete.

Date: 1877-1971
Arrangement:

The files are arranged chronologically under annual cause number. The cause number in the catalogue comprises the year of the action, the initial letter of the plaintiff's surname, followed by another number. In cases from 1877-1883 the series of these final numbers began afresh each year. From 1884 the numeration was in one continuous sequence, running up to number 1696 in 1958. From 1959 onwards the earlier practice of numbering by year was resumed.

If the cause number of a case is unknown, it is best to ascertain this from the indexes at the front of the related cause books in DURH 22

Separated material:

Some case files are missing. Some files from the nineteenth century onwards are now kept at Archives and Special Collections, Durham University Library; they date mainly from 1880-1928, and run up to cause number 1928 B 1257, including a considerable number from 1928 itself.
