The Engine Requirements Co-ordinating Committee was originally formed in 1944 under the auspices of the Air Registration Board and continued when the Civil Aviation Authority's Airworthiness Division took over the functions of the board in 1972. It was originally called the Engine Requirements Committee but was reconstituted in 1946 with the following terms of reference: 'to co-ordinate the preparation of and to approve, subject to the concurrence of the Council of the Air Registration Board, British Civil Airworthiness Requirements relevant to engines, engine accessories and propellors, for use on civil aeroplanes'. In 1972 these terms were expanded to include 'whenever considered appropriate, to recommend to the Civil Aviation Authority and to the Ministry of Defence (Procurement Executive), such action as appears necessary to co-ordinate the airworthiness standards specified for engines to be fitted in military transport aircraft developed under Ministry of Defence (Procurement Executive) contract and those specified in the British Civil Airworthiness Requirements' and 'when required by the Civil Aviation Authority, to consider proposals for submission to be made to the International Civil Aviation Organisation in regard to airworthiness of engines, engine accessories and propellors, for use in civil aircraft'. Members of the committee have included, at various times, representatives of the Ministry of Aircraft Production, Ministry of Supply, Society of British Aircraft Constructors and various airlines, as well as Air Registration Board and Civil Aviation Authority staff. |
