Administrative / biographical background:

An Establishments Division was set up in July 1919. It was responsible for the organisation, staffing and accommodation of the department, including outdoor staffs. It also dealt with staffing matters of related bodies such as the Board of Control and, for a time, the General Register Office. In 1956 a Statistical Branch was formed within it, and in 1961 the division was renamed the Establishments and Organisation Division.
