Returns to Committee on Cotton Library.

Tables forming part of Appendix E of the report of the committee of the House of Commons appointed to view the Cottonian Library etc on 9 May 1732, compiled by John Lawton, Keeper of the Records in the Exchequer. They indicate the location of the following records:

  • 1. Records of the High Court of Chancery: parliamentary rolls, statute rolls, close rolls, decree rolls, charter rolls, coronation rolls, liberate rolls, treaty rolls, fine rolls, Scotch rolls, French rolls, Roman rolls, Vascon [Gascon] rolls, Norman rolls, writs of summons and returns to Parliament, inquisitions post mortem, inquisitions ad quod dampnum, bills, answers, depostitions etc in Chancery and petitions in Parliament.
  • 2. Records of the High Court of Chancery: privy seals, signet bills, special commissions, inquisitions and traverses relating to forfeited estates, inquisitions and decrees of commissioners of charitable uses and enrolments of proceedings on appeals from such commissioners' decrees, laws and adjudications of sewers, proceedings on statute staple, judgements on scire facias and on declarations for and against officers of the Court of Chancery, commissions and inquisitions of lunacy and idiocy, certificates of qualifications of members of Parliament, popish convicts and persons concealed, signs manual, Welsh rolls and treaties and transactions with Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Castile, Aragon, Flanders, Holland and United Provinces, Burgundy, Navarre and Brittany.
  • 3. Rolls of the Court of King's Bench, placita corona, placita de quo warranto, rolls of the Court of Common Pleas, assize rolls, fines, bills and answers, depositions and other proceedings in the Court of Star Chamber, placita foresta, perambulations and other proceedings relating to forests, gaol deliveries, writs of most kinds, attainders, an assay roll of the Mint, Court of Wards and Liveries, Court of Requests.
  • 4. Records of the Court of Exchequer and Duchy of Lancaster: pipe rolls, rolls of foreign accounts, leases from the crown, bills, answers, depositions, decrees and other proceedings in the Court of Augmentations, rolls of ministers' accounts, conventual leases before their dissolution, surrenders of abbeys and monasteries, court rolls of manors that were formerly possessed by the crown, books of enrolments of grants in fee or for terms of years from the crown, surveys of lands, manors etc, surveys of ecclesiastical benefices, plea rolls, bills, answers and decrees and other equity proceedings in the Court of Exchequer, Exchequer memoranda rolls, originalia rolls, rolls of pleas and proceedings in the Court of Exchequer, bishops' certificates of institutions and patronages, bills, answers etc of the Duchy of Lancaster.
