Description: |
Lunacy. A collection of four letters, one with an enclosure, relating to Caroline Mart, a 27 year old British subject from Birmingham, Warwickshire, confined in the asylum at Salpêtrière (Seine), France. The first letter is from Lord Stanley of Alderley to Horatio Waddington enclosing a copied letter, in French, from Count Walewski, the French Ambassador in England, officially requesting arrangements to return Caroline Mart to England. The remaining three letters are from Henry Smith, Mayor of Birmingham, to Horatio Waddington, acknowledging the receipt of certain letters and agreeing to make enquiries into Caroline Mart's family and friends to ascertain if they can provide for her. Towards the end of the chain of correspondence it becomes clear that no family can be found to claim Caroline Mart. |
