The legal work of the Board of Trade was conducted by the solicitor to the Board of Customs until 1875, when the board acquired its own solicitor. In 1887 the Solicitor's Department was established. This was partly occupied with providing legal advice to the other departments of the board and parliamentary drafting, partly with the conduct of legal proceedings on violations of acts administered by the board or by the Export Credits Guarantee Department, and partly with work connected with shipping and other official enquiries.
