1 item (formerly among the papers of Sir Lintorn Simmons) extracted from FO 358/1. Ottoman Empire. 'Reconnaissance of the Defensive Position between the Sea of Marmora and Black Sea. Covering Constantinople [now Istanbul] from the westward': map of the area (now in Turkey) between Lake Terkos and Büyükçekmece, showing the nature of the terrain, contours, rivers, roads, a proposed railway and tramway, place names, fortifications, and works proposed by Captain T Fraser, Royal Engineers. Reference table to distances from Constantinople railway terminus. Compass indicator. Produced on instructions issued by Lieutenant General Sir Lintorn Simmons, Royal Engineers, KCB, IGF, by order of His Royal Highness The Field Marshal Commanding in Chief [the Duke of Cambridge]; sketched by Captain [J C] Ardagh, Royal Engineers, Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General, and by Lieutenants Cockburn and [H] Chermside, October - November 1876, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel R Home, Royal Engineers, CB, Assistant Quartermaster General; lithographed at the Intelligence Branch, Quartermaster General's Department, January 1877.
