Description:

Lancashire: map to show the area of Formby, Altcar, Halsall and Down Holland. Shows marshland (Holland, Barton and Formby mosses), fields in Formby, Barton common, paths, gate, woods; River Alt, stream, ditches, pools, bridges. Churches, houses and four windmills conventionally represented, in simple perspective. Sites of another mill and an oven denoted. Place where tithes paid indicated by legend and wheat-sheaf symbol. Place names and other legends in scrolls, in black or red ink, in black-letter script. No scale shown. Cardinal points indicated by human heads with scrolls issuing from their mouths. Oriented to the west. Narrow brown border. Endorsement on label, in late seventeenth-century hand: 'No 69 Barton Pole Head'. To illustrate a dispute, Henry Halsall v Edward, Earl of Derby, and others, concerning the boundaries of the manors of Downholland and Formby. Papers in the same case are in DL 3/75, H3, and earlier papers in DL 3/64, H2. MPC 1/90 is a placard relating to the case.
