Administrative / biographical background:

In 1869 an Accounts Branch was established under the chief clerk, but by 1874 it was no longer under his control and had been renamed the Financial Department. From 1898 it was called the Accounts Department to avoid confusion with the General and Financial Department set up in 1896 to deal with major financial questions. The Accounts Department continued until 1952, when its functions were divided between the Economic General and Finance Departments.
