Three sets of papers from the First, Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars. (Described at item level). [Items1-4]. 'The Hamburg business', or the 'Hamburg loss' (the burning of English ships in the River Elbe by the Dutch on 24 August 1666, when under the protection of the neutral City of Hamburg). Captain Edmund Greene v Senate and Republic of Hamburg; later Elizabeth Birstall, relict and administratrix of Edmund Greene v Senate and Republic of Hamburg. Claim for compensation for the loss of the Mary Bonadventure, burnt at New Mill [Neumühlen], of which Greene was master and charterer. Other ships also burnt were the King's Merchant (master Roger Keate), Caesar Augustus (master Robert Scotten), Red Lion (master Henry Peterson), Mary of London (master Robert Hunter), and Olive Branch (master Robert Bromwell): there are also papers for these ships, but most relate to the Mary Bonadventure. Now listed as items 1-4. [Item 5]. Papers relating to the crew of two English ships taken on the Barbary coast, 1671-1672. [Item 6]. Libels, allegations and exhibits from over at least 10 years, found loose in the 1670s. |
