Medical journal of HMS Eagle, from 1 January to 31 December 1846 by Peter Leonard, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Rio de Ja[neiro] Station on the South East Coast of South America.

Folio 1: remarks, an ably written journal containing some interesting remarks on scurvy, together with a great deal of important information regarding certain localities on the River Plate, Signed A.B., and the supplimentary notes of greatest satisfaction, signed W.B [William Burnett]

Folios 1-5: case no. 1, Dennis Kovney, aged 21, ordinary seaman, taken ill at Maldonado; sick or hurt, dysenteria, he was belong to the second cutter, and employed at Maldonado and Goritti, the nature of the service obliged him to pass the night frequently in his boat, he was of a full habit, complexion florid, he was seized during the night with griping attended with frequent desire to empty the bowels much straining and tenesmus; put on sick list, 15 January 1846, discharged 8 April 1846 to duty.

Folios 1-5: case no. 2, John Hawkins, aged 30, able seaman, taken ill at Maldonado Bay; sick or hurt, dysenteria, he was a forecastle man and was employ stowing provisions in the hold and while heated and perspiring drank a good deal of water to which he attributed his illness. He was strong and muscular and full habit of body, he was frequently purged during the day, the dejection consisted entirely of mucous and blood attended with pain in the abdomen and loins, straining and desire to sit and a sense of soreness around and within the anus; put on sick list, 20 January 1846, discharged 3 March 1846 to duty.
