Medical journal of the Asia convict ship from 26 July to 14 December 1827 by George Fairfowl, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in transporting convicts to Van Diemen's Land.

Folios 22-25: Surgeon's general remarks. The surgeon joined the ship at Deptford on 26 July 1827. On 27 July the guard was embarked, and on 8 Aug the convicts came on board at Spithead. On the 17 Aug the ship proceeded on the voyage and arrived at Hobart, Van Dieman's Land on 7 December 1827. On the 14 December 1827, 198 convicts and all the guard were landed having buried two on the passage. The complement of the Asia was as follows: officers and ship's company, 42; guard, officers and soldiers of the 40th Regiment, 52; women, 6, and children, 12; male convicts 200, and one surgeon; total 313. With respect to the ages of the convicts, 45 under the age of 20; 115 between 20 and 30; 34 between the ages of 30 to 40; 5 between the ages of 40 to 50; and one aged 57. Their sentences were for life, 134; 14 years, 28; for 7 years, 38. 80 convicts were married, 117 were single men, and 3 were widowers. As to education, 89 could read and write; 39 read alone; 72 could neither read or write.
