One of the duties of the six clerks was to make patents for the appointment of sheriffs, until this was declared unnecessary by the Fines Act of 1833. Thereafter the newly appointed sheriff was to receive a warrant from the clerk of the privy seal. Even so, sheriffs' rolls continued to be collected in the Six Clerks Office until its abolition in 1842. |
