Catalogue description Bond Books

Records of bonds issued on behalf of the Royal African Company, including details of the value of the bonds, the rates of interest payable on them, and the names of those to whom they were issued. Some books contain details of payments to ships' captains, inspectors of forts and other company employees, payments for attendance by the company's representatives at Courts Committees, and settlements relating to legal judgments.

There are also records of bonds issued at the Customs House for the export of 'prohibited' East India Company goods, such as taffeta, damask and chintz, and of bonds issued on account of 'drawbacks' for other goods. The books include the names of ships and their commanders, the types of goods and the penalty charges.
