These journals record the payment of statutory duty by the Royal African Company on goods exported from the United Kingdom to Africa, including small arms, gunpowder, brandy, knives and pewter, and on goods imported from Africa, such as ivory and redwood. They include the names of ships and their captains, and the names of collectors of duty in the West Indies and the United Kingdom.

There are also details of payments of the salaries of the governors, soldiers, employees and slaves, and expenditure on guns, ammunition etc at the company's various forts, including Accra, Winnebagh and Cape Coast Castle on the Gold Coast.
