These books of letters received and sent concern Fort Lewis, Senegal; correspondence with the South Sea Company; trade in Africa; and a mission to the King of Ashanti. The Senegal correspondence contains orders to manufacturers for weapons and uniforms, instructions to ships' captains, and questions to merchants about the gum trade. The Governor's letters back concern supplies, and trade and relations with the indigenous population. Correspondence with the South Sea Company concerns the Royal African Company's contract for the supply of 'negroes' to South America and the Caribbean. The Ashanti Mission papers concern the promotion of trade and scientific research, a draft treaty, and reports on progress.
