Description:

This series contains registered files of the Marine Navigational Aids Division of the Ministry of Transport and of the Marine Divisions of the Board of Trade, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Trade, and the Department of Transport.

The files cover various aspects of navigational aids resulting from statutory provisions of the Merchant Shipping Acts, including radio aids to marine navigation, air/sea rescue arrangements, pilotage and lighthouse services, wrecks and salvage, and prevention of pollution of the sea by oil. Some files relate to the control of works in tidal waters, including dumping and dredging, the Imperial Lighthouse Service and Irish lighthouses. It was also the liaison with other member nations of the North Atlantic Ice Patrol and was also made responsible for the provisions of the Continental Shelf Act 1964 as far as the safety of navigation was concerned. A number of files concern specific locations.

The Marine Navigational Aids Division of the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Divisions of the Board of Trade and its successors were jointly responsible, with the Establishment Division of the Ministry of Transport, for the administration of HM Coastguard, whilst radio surveys under the Merchant Shipping Acts and Rules made thereunder are carried out by Wireless Telegraphy Inspectors of the General Post Office.
