Russia. 'Carte de Moscovie ...' [Map of Muscovy]: two copies of a map covering the area (now chiefly in the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Finland) between Lake Inari in the north-west, the Pechora River in the north-east, and the Sea of Azov in the south; showing rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, towns, monasteries, dukedoms, principalities, etc. Detailed reference notes on topography, history and inhabitants. Title on a shield surmounted by coat of arms and motto: 'Laboribus, Meritis, Virtute, Ac Sanguine'; scale bar in a cartouche with foliage. Scale: 1 inch to about 50 versts. By Guillaume De l'Isle, [French] Academie Royale des Sciences; dedicated to His Excellency Monseigneur André Artémonidès de Matueof; engraved by Liebaux fils; published in Paris, 1706. Coloured MS additions on both copies highlight various boundaries; the additions are different on each copy and their precise significance is unclear.
