Description:

Kingdom of Sicily (now part of Italy): Messina. Seven sheets of drawings of fortifications: (1) 'Outline of the Walls of Messina shewing the Incumbrances [sic] upon & near the Ramparts and Parapets; with a Project for covering some of the Escarps against the Enemy's Artillery': plan and section; (2) 'Plan of Fort St. Andrea with the Proposed Additions'; (3) 'Section... on the Plan of Fort St. Andrea'; (4) 'Plan of Castellazo with the proposed Additions'; (5) 'Sections... upon the Plan of Castellazo'; (6) 'Plan of Fort Gonzala'; (7) 'Sections... on the Plan of Fort Gonzala'. Reference table to item (1) detailing ramparts and defences. Scale: (1) 4 inches to about 700 feet [1:2,100]; (2) 1 inch to 50 feet [1:600]; (3-4, 6) 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]; (5) 1 inch to 7 feet [1:84]; (7) 1 inch to 10 feet [1:120]. Compass indicators to items (1) and (6). Items (1, 6-7) [drawn or copied] by Lieutenant George F Macleod, Royal Engineers; items (2-5) by Lieutenant George Hoste, Royal Engineers. All items signed by Captain Charles Lefebure, Commanding Royal Engineer. Dimensions: (1) 84 cm x 103 cm; (2) 36 cm x 52 cm; (3) 29 cm x 48 cm; (4) 51 cm x 57 cm; (5) 49 cm x 73 cm; (6) 54 cm x 95 cm; (7) 47 cm x 147 cm. Lieutenant Macleod became a Second Captain on 1 July 1806; items (1, 6-7) presumably predate his promotion.
