Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Charles Henry Darling, governor of Jamaica, relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands (December 1859 only), together with letters from Offices (Government departments and other organisations) and Individuals written during the course of the year. Correspondence from 'offices' and individuals is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (postal service);
  • Board of Trade (suggested establishment of a Vice Admiralty Court for the adjudication of wreck and salvage cases);
  • Privy Council Office (appointments to Legislative Council [missing]);
  • Emigration and Land Board (change of tenure of salt ponds, conversion of leasehold of salt ponds into freehold);
  • Foreign Office (suggestion of United States consul for a Vice Admiralty Court to be established);
  • Law Officers (charges by the acting puisne judge and the queen's advocate against each other);
  • Treasury (approval of appropriation of £500);
  • War Office (mail service, position of detachment given lack of communication, proposed removal of detachment, Governors request for copies of all statutes relating to volunteer corps);
  • General Post Office (mail service, changes in the West India Mail Packet Service; communication between UK and Turks Islands);
  • Inhabitants of Cockburn Harbour, East Caicos (petition expressing 'want of confidence' in the president; further petition);
  • Colonial Church and School Society (concerning the 'lamentable condition of the inhabitants of the Caicos Islands')
