This series contains notebooks compiled by the Director of Torry Research Station, Dr G A Reay, during visits made to various locations significant to the fishing industry, 1937-1940.

The notebooks contain information on visits he made to various commercial establishments such as fish factories, cold stores, processing plants, etc, both in this country and in Norway, and one book is devoted to an account of a nine-day trip he undertook on a fishing trawler from Aberdeen to the North Atlantic.

George Adam Reay (born 31 May 1901) joined the staff of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1927 and began working at the Torry Research Station when it was opened. He was appointed as Officer in Charge of the Station in 1937, a post which later became known as Superintendent (from 1946), and Director (from 1958), and which he held until his retirement in 1964. His main fields of interest were the study of the possibility of improving the handling of white fish at sea and the investigation of the problems of handling and processing fish as food.
