Description: |
Trial of the pyx chest: massive planked oak chest with three locks and hasps [one missing], and pivot hinges re-inforced with iron plates. Integral till. This chest formerly bore a chalk inscription Tryal pieces', which shows that it was used in connection with the trial of the pyx. There are also some chalk marks, probably dating from the sixteenth century, on the inside of the lid. Largely illegible, they appear to be an inventory of date range or contents. Originally kept at Westminster Abbey, in the Chapel of the Pyx: the chapel retains two similar chests, which appear to have been used for treaty documents. |
