The Command was formed on 1 April 1938. Maintenance Command, which was the largest employer of civilian labour in the Royal Air Force, formed the supply and engineering backing to the Service. Amongst its responsibilities was the receiving, inspecting, storing and issuing of aircraft equipment, spares, materials and explosives. Other functions included servicing, general engineering, repair salvage, bomb disposal and gas production. Maintenance Command disbanded on 31 August 1973 and its functions were absorbed by Support Command.
