Administrative / biographical background:

Under the terms of the National Heritage Act 1983, the new Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission was required to constitute at least one committee to advise it on its statutory functions in relation to ancient monuments. Consequently, the Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee was formed and held its first meeting in April 1984. The committee was responsible for advising the Commission on issues including the scheduling or descheduling of ancient monuments (in particular cases which are novel, contentious or set a precedent); the acquisition or taking into guardianship of monuments by English Heritage; the awarding of grants to groups and individuals for archaeological investigation; the awarding of grants for the maintenance of monuments under Sections 17 and 45 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and the formulation of advice to the Commission in respect of scheduled monument consent applications. Following a reorganisation of English Heritage's committee structure in 2001, the committee was disbanded and its duties divided between the newly-created Historic Built Environment Advisory Committee and Historic Settlements and Landscapes Advisory Committee.
