Administrative / biographical background:

The Public Trustee is an officer appointed by the Lord Chancellor under the Public Trustee Act 1906. The role is responsible for administering for the public trust funds and estates where he has accepted appointment to do so.

In 2001 the offices of the Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court, and the Public Trustee became merged as the Official Solicitor and Public Trustee and were housed in one office building, but they continued to have separate corporate functions. On 1 April 2007, the Court Funds Office joined with the Official Solicitor and Public Trustee to become the Offices of Court Funds, Official Solicitor and Public Trustee; this organisation was an associated office of the Ministry of Justice. On 1 April 2009, offices were demerged.
