In February 1993, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the appointment of an adjudicator to investigate complaints about the way the Inland Revenue and its agency, the Valuation Office Agency, had dealt with a citizen's affairs. The first Adjudicator was appointed on 1 July 1993. In April 1995 the remit was extended to include the work of HM Customs and Excise and the Contributions Agency. The name of the organisation changed to The Adjudicator's Office to reflect this. The Contributions Unit of Northern Ireland was added to the remit in 1998. The Adjudicator acts as a fair and unbiased referee looking into complaints about HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), including the Tax Credit Office (TCO), and the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). The Adjudicator also looks into complaints about the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) and The Insolvency Service. |
