Prisoner name: James Brown, real name James Bentote. Prisoner age: 22. Court and date of trial: Kent Summer Assizes, August 1838. Crime: Stealing handkerchief from the person of William Merritt of the Kent Road. Initial sentence: 10 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Not known here but supposed bad character from London. Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Petitioner(s): Two petitions from James Bentote of 1 Sale Street, Bethnal Green, the prisoner's father, the first undersigned by seven inhabitants, the second by six inhabitants of Bethnal Green and district. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character; first offence; led astray by another. Additional Information: Prisoner held in Maidstone gaol.
