Administrative / biographical background:

The Central and Southern Africa Department was created from amalgamating the Southern Africa and Central Africa Departments of the FCO in 1991. The resulting department was responsible for managing and documenting the UK's political and economic relations with Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Sao Tome and Principe, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC). In 1993 it became the Africa Department (Southern).
