Description:

Gilberte Elizabeth LAZARUS alias Betty KNOUT alias KNUTH: French. Yaacov LEVSTEIN alias ELIAV: Czechoslovak. A leader of the Stern Gang, LEVSTEIN was jailed in Jerusalem in 1942 but escaped the following year. In June 1947 he and LAZARUS were arrested by Belgian border police in possession of letter bombs addressed to senior British officials. LAZARUS was subsequently identified as the woman who in April 1947 had left a bomb (which failed to go off) in the Colonial Office in London. LEVSTEIN's fingerprints were found on this device establishing that he was the bomb maker. Both LAZARUS and LEVSTEIN only served short sentences in Belgium

Note: Serial 13a: 'Wanted' poster and photograph. This is a heavily-weeded file. Both subjects are of Russian origin. LAZARUS was the granddaughter of the composer SCRIABIN and a relative of MOLOTOV
