Administrative / biographical background:

The Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN) is an independent inter-departmental body in the UK, established in 1919. Its principal function is to advise the British Government on policies and procedures for the proper writing of geographical names for places and features outside the UK, excluding those of the Antarctic.

The PCGN's costs are met by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Ministry of Defence. The permanent staff of the Committee are accommodated in the Committee's offices which, to serve inter-departmental interests, are located within the House of the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, London.

Members of the PCGN are: the British Broadcasting Corporation Monitoring Service; the Intelligence Collection Group (ICG), formerly the Defence Geospatial Intelligence; Defence Intelligence; the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ); the Hydrographic Office; Ordnance Survey; the Royal Geographical Society; and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
