Description:

Second Anglo-Dutch War.

Captured ship: Abraham's Sacrifice of Genoa otherwise Offer van Abraham or Sacrificio d'Abram (master Antonio Basso).

History: a Genoese ship (450 tons), bound from Amsterdam to Cadiz, Malaga and Genoa (allegedly with the Duke of York's pass to go via the Channel, but instead went north-about round Scotland and Ireland, prepared to fight any British privateer), laden with cinnamon, pepper and other spices, logwood, ebony, brazil wood, Muscovy leather, whalebone, tar, iron, brass, pewter, lead (the lead taken from the prize John and Mary of Ipswich) and other goods; taken on 15/26 June 1667 about 50 leagues off the Black Rock of Galway by HMS Amity, HMS Eagle, HMS Falcon and HMS Guinea, and brought into Galway.

  • 1. 1667 Aug 7- Aug 8. Copies of depositions taken before Robert Southwell, Vice Admiral in the province of Munster, Ireland, 7-8 August 1667, and sent to L Franklin on 13 March 1669: of
    • Stephen Pyend, captain of HMS Amity;
    • five Englishmen in the crew of the Abraham's Sacrifice:- John Pomery, of Plymouth, now a sailor on HMS Guinea; Luke Merritt of Jersey and Laurence Mann of Dartmouth, English prisoners escaped from Amsterdam; Antony Laghorne of Truro age 47, an English carpenter previously of the John and Mary of Ipswich, apparently taken by the Abraham's Sacrifice; Joseph Bluett age 22, who refused to fight against his nation and was threatened by Basso.
  • 2. 1667 Aug 22. Proceedings in the sale of the Abraham's Sacrifice, Galway.
  • 3. 1668 May 5. Letter from Peter Pett to Matthew Barry, transmitting copies of the depositions (attached).
  • 4. 1668 Aug 9-18. Claims: Italian merchants' accounts, taken at Amsterdam, with translation: Parenzi and Bantinucci of Lucca; Giovanni Gabriele Voet; Ottavio Tensini.
  • 5. 1668 Aug 18. Claims: Genesio Noceto, merchant: account taken in Genoa (translated on 10 October 1668)
  • 6. 1669 Feb 4. Claims: two appeals by Giovanni Maria Cambiosa and others, owners of the ship the Abraham's Offering [Abraham's Sacrifice], and for its goods

  • 9. 1669 March-May. Claims: Three letters requisitorial to examine witnesses on behalf of Giovanni Maria Cambiasso. Depositions taken on 23 May 1669. For the owners of the ship and for its goods.
  • 10. 1669 Aug. Account of the proceedings about the Abraham's Sacrifice.
  • 11. 1668-1679. Correspondence relating to the search for papers concerning the Abraham's Sacrifice in the High Court of Admiralty registry, including: Order from the Privy Council for searching for papers re the Abraham's Sacrifice (16 October 1668); Joseph Williamson forwarding Sir Peter Pett's report (attached) to Sir Leoline Jenkins, Sir Robert Witeman and Sir Peter Pett (15 June 1672); various papers regarding the Abraham's Sacrifice in the High Court of Admiralty registry (1 January 1677-13 October 1679).
