Renato Dos Santos ROQUE LAIA: Portuguese. A businessman in the pay of Germany, ROQUE LAIA was discovered retrospectively to have been in the UK for several months in 1940 with an intelligence brief. ROQUE LAIA himself claimed that he had managed to discover details of Rolls Royce engines which were passed to a staff member of the Portuguese embassy in London. The assessment was that while he may have been a genuine spy it was also possible that his actual role was to plant misleading information on MI5. In 1941 he moved from Lisbon to Angola |
