Administrative / biographical background:

The Planning and Development Control Directorate was created in 1988 in the Department of the Environment, taking over the functions previously handled by the Planning Land Use Policy Directorate. The Directorate initially handled matters relating to development planning, land transactions, specialist planning appeals and development control. In 1991, responsibility for planning and development in the inner cities and the urban development corporations was added. In 1993 the Directorate was renamed the Planning Directorate.
