Administrative / biographical background:

Guidance has occassionally been required for internal Public Record Office staff to ensure that their duties have been carried out correctly. Such records have been preserved in this series if it is felt they shed a useful light upon the functions of the Office to researchers.

Any division / department/ bureau / unit within the Public Record Office may have had recourse to produce internal guidance to its staff to improve business processes and the services provided to its customers. For this reason, an administrative history detailing where guidance was created is an unfeasible undertaking. Therefore, researchers are referred to the Keepers Annual Reports PRO 43 to establish the organisation of the Public Record Office when attempting to trace which Unit issued the guidance at a specific time.
