Administrative / biographical background:

In 1938 the Diseases of Animals Division was named the Animal Health Division, taking over the related functions of the Livestock Division. The Animal Health Division divided into two separate divisions in 1965, into three in 1968 and finally into four in 1972. The second dealing with animal welfare, the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and pig and poultry health schemes. Following re-organisation of the Animal Health Group in 1987, Division II was split with the welfare functions (including the Secretariat of the Farm Animal Welfare Council) forming a new Animal Welfare Division. In 1989 the Animal Welfare and Animal Medicine Divisions were joined to form an Animal Welfare and Protection Division. Further restructuring in 1992 created an Animal Health Division dealing with animal health on farms, in markets and in transit. This also provided the secretariat for the Farm Animal Welfare Council.
