Custodial history: Since the file series ceased to accrue the records have been in the custody of the Department of the Environment (1992-1997), the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1997-2001), the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (2001-2002) and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (2002 to date).

Administrative / biographical background:

In 1972 the Economics, Housing Division was set up in the Department of the Environment, inheriting economic and statistics functions formally carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. In 1977 it began the ECH file series which it continued to use until 1987.
