Administrative / biographical background:

This order was created by Queen Victoria by letters patent in the year 1896. The statutes have been revised at various times . The current statutes provide for five principal classes of members, for officers, and for honorary membership for foreigners nominated by the sovereign; they provide that the Lord Chamberlain shall be Chancellor, the Keeper of the Privy Purse shall be Secretary, that there shall be a Registrar, and a Chaplain. Since 1938 the Chapel of the Savoy in Savoy Hill has been the Chapel of the Order.
