Administrative / biographical background:

The FAO Department handled UK policy towards, and relations with, the various agencies of the United Nations which dealt with matters of food supply and nutrition, principally the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme and UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) and the related health agencies.

The department also dealt with general questions of renewable natural resources, food and fertiliser aid, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and, following the UK's accession to the European Communities, EEC relations with the above organisations. FAO Department was renamed United Nations Department B in 1979.
